Our new class structure
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced student, we want you to get the most from our classes
– and that means making sure all the classes are the right level for you.

There’s nothing more frustrating than going to a class which is too easy for you, or so difficult you can’t
remember the moves.  It’s also tricky when other students in the class are at a different level to you.

So we’ve come up with a structure for our classes to make sure every lesson is taught at the right level, and
you’ve got a clear way of knowing how much you’ve progressed and what you need to work on to enjoy your
tango more.

How to progress through the different levels: the ‘Award’ scheme
Anyone can join our Level 1 classes at any time.

When you’re ready to progress into a class at the next level, you will be invited to have a personal feedback
session with one of our teachers, free of charge.  This will take about 15 minutes, and you’ll get the chance
to show what you’ve learnt from the class you’ve been attending.  When you’re able to dance the different
elements for that level confidently, you’ll get an award for that level which gives you a pass to attend the
classes at the next level.

Each 1-hour class for the level you’re currently at costs £10 (or 1.5 hours on Tuesdays).  As you progress,
you’ll probably want to revise some of the elements you’ve covered at the lower levels (we find the more
experienced the dancer is, the more likely they are to want to polish the basics!).  You’re welcome to attend
as many classes as you like at levels you’ve already been given an award for, at half price.

Existing Oktango students
We want to give you some feedback on how far you’ve progressed, so when you next come to a class you
can arrange a 15-minute personal feedback session (free of charge) and gain an award which gives you
access to the next class level.  Until you’ve had your session, we’ll give you a provisional pass to attend the
level which we think is currently most suitable for you.

Already been to tango classes elsewhere?
It's great to see new faces who’ve done some tango before.  Because there are many different styles of
teaching tango, when you first come you’ll need to go to a Foundation class (Level 1) to double-check the
basics are the same as you’ve learnt elsewhere, so you don’t find yourself ‘in at the deep-end’ with
unfamiliar terminology and different ways of doing things.  If you’re sure you’re really confident with
everything at our lower levels, you can arrange to meet with one of our teachers for 15 mins before the
class so you can join the ‘award’ scheme and go straight into a higher-level (please call 07946 471635
in
advance
so we can fit you in).

When we invite you to attend a higher level class to help us out
Very occasionally, we need to balance the numbers of leaders and followers for the different classes and we
may invite you to take a class at a higher level than you’ve been given a pass for.  This is a chance for you
to get a taste of what’s ahead, then the next time you attend you’ll take your regular class until you’ve
completed the award at that level.

How to book your personal feedback session and gain an award
Teachers will be available before and after classes to spend up to 15 minutes with you going through the
material you’ve learnt and seeing if you qualify for an award at that level, which gives you access to the next
level up.  You’ll need to demonstrate each move on the curriculum (see Curriculum for each level), and you’
ll receive a chart showing your progress.  Sessions must be booked in advance either when you attend a
previous class, or by phone on 07946 471635.  Slots are available for 1 hour before the lesson and 1 hour
afterwards (except Tuesdays – just 30 mins before the lesson).

Our curriculum - what you'll learn in the lessons
We've got a structured programme so you know what you'll learn at each class (see table below).

As a guide, you'll  need to do at least the following number of lessons at each level so you cover the whole
curriculum and gain the award which allows you access to classes at the next level (if you miss a topic, you
can catch up at one of our workshops, at a private class, or the next time the topic comes around in the
cycle):
Level 1        2-6 classes (curriculum repeats every 2 weeks)
Level 2        10-30 classes (curriculum repeats every 10 weeks)
Level 3        15-45 classes (curriculum repeats every 15 weeks)
Level 4        1-3 years (curriculum repeats every 15 weeks)
